[Opinion] Shandur Polo Festival and Environmental Effects

Tourism brings economic blessings to the people who are privileged to have attractive natural environment or men made wonders all around the world. Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral are some of the few wonderful places with exemplary natural beauty that attracts people from all over the world to enjoy some the best moments in their lives. Shandur Polo Ground, a magnificent and enchanting roof of the world, offers both adventure and comfort of nature to many people and economic opportunity to the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral. However, there are side effects of highly praised event of ‘Shandur Polo Festival’ the most notable is environmental pollution. People who do visit to this festival could see that many irresponsible tourists leave their garbage without disposing it off properly which creates an ugly seen in the beauty of Shandur. It is not only tourist who are responsible for this misdeed, side by side, the administration is also one of the main responsible contributors to the pollution as it is failed to provide any appropriate garbage disposal services.

The friends of a clean environment and people of Gilgit-Baltistan and Chitral and thankful to civil society and environment friendly youth organizations such as ‘Youth Club Majini Mahalla, Gilgit’ and ‘Northern Areas Environmental Protection Agency’ have taken praise worthy initiatives to dispose garbage and cleaning the water streams.
