Pakistani government approves construction of Diamer-Bhasha Dam


Islamabad: In a meeting chaired by Finance Minister Shaukat Tarin, the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has formally approved the construction of Diamer-Bhasah dam which will cost of Rs. 894bn. It is expected that the dam would produce 4,500 megawatt electricity and will also store water that could irrigate up to 3 million acre land in Punjab. In a news conference, the upbeat Pervez Asharaf federal minster for Water and Power claimed that the 272 meter high dam will be highest in the world constructed from concrete and steel. Source
