GBLA Elections!

November 15, 2009 Leave a comment

Amid allegations of pre-poll and post-poll rigging the elections for the newly formed Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly have now peacefully taken place. For the greatness of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto who dismantled the oppressive and colonial laws of Frontier Crimes Regulations or FCR and made the first serious attempt to address the real issues of the indigenous people, the PPP has now been able to get a resounding victory surprising all opinion makers, political analysts and nationalist party leaders. While mainland Pakistan is up in arms against the corrupt practices of the Zardari led PP government the people of Gilgit-Baltistan have given a strange verdict in favour of sitting government.

Despite the key leadership of all mainstream Pakistani political parties visiting the region and promising rights, addressing issues of poverty and development the electorate of Gilgit-Baltistan has delivered what the local intelligentsia was dreading.

Qamar Kaira, Yusuf Gilani, and even Nawaz Sharrif who trotted the far flung valleys didn’t say anything meaningful in their respective visits but they simply watched the masses who had gathered around them as extras in a musical. It is high time that the nationalist parties should change their agenda, tactics and methods of engaging masses to make them realise that we the people of Gilgit-Baltistan can get meaningful concessions from the lukewarm federal government if we develop local movements of political resistance.  If we elect people who speak on behalf of PPP, PML-N, PML-Q, or MQM then we are doomed for another half a century.
